Boston University and Cornell ready for a rematch in New York City

Following the sold-out success of the 2007 contest, Boston University Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Mike Lynch and Cornell University’s Meakem*Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education Andy Noel announced today that Red Hot Hockey will burn again at Madison Square Garden on November 28, 2009, as Boston University and Cornell resume an 85 year-old rivalry in a non-conference NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey match-up.

Reserved discounted tickets in the Class of 1996 section are now available to alums by completing the form linked below and returning it by email to the ‘96 Class Council.  cuclassof96hockeytixorderform3

Full price unreserved tickets are also available through ticketmaster and stub-hub.

“This is an exciting opportunity to return to the Big Apple for what only can be described as a big game against one of our biggest rivals,” said Lynch. “Thousands of alumni from both schools sold out the first edition of Red Hot Hockey, and many more have been asking if we could bring another game to New York City. We are excited that BU-Cornell will return to Madison Square Garden, and we encourage fans to purchase their tickets and make their travel accommodations for Manhattan as soon as possible.”

The inaugural Red Hot Hockey event, in front of 18,200 passionate students, alumni, parents and fans, was a resounding success. Held on November 24, 2007, it marked the first time a collegiate hockey game had sold out the “World’s Most Famous Arena,” and featured the attendance of prominent alumni from both schools, including members of the 1980 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic hockey team Mike Eruzione, Jack O’Callahan and David Silk from Boston University, as well as former NHL great and Cornell alum, Joe Nieuwendyk.

“I am thrilled to continue the great rivalry with Boston University,” Noel said. “They are currently ranked #1 in the nation and are one of the finest teams in collegiate ice hockey. This game provides terrific competition for our athletes and represents a major event for our alumni and friends in the metro-New York area.”

Both schools are perennial college hockey powerhouses. Boston University, which has sat atop the national polls for much of the 2008-09 season and is currently ranked #1 in the nation, has won the national championship four times (1971, 1972, 1978 and 1995), while Cornell, currently ranked #12 in the nation, has claimed the title twice (1967, 1970). Combined, the two schools have seen 80 former players forge careers in the National Hockey League, including the likes of current Rangers captain Chris Drury, Keith Tkachuk and Tony Amonte (Boston University), as well as Doug Murray, Ken Dryden and Joe Nieuwendyk (Cornell).

“We are excited that two of college hockey’s most storied programs will return to The Garden,” said Joel Fisher, executive vice president, Madison Square Garden Sports. “The 2007 match-up was sold out proving that college hockey has a place in New York City. We are proud to welcome back Boston University and Cornell University to Madison Square Garden, and look forward to hosting this storied match-up once again.”

The BU–Cornell rivalry began on Jan. 10, 1925, with a 7-2 victory by the Terriers, and includes two match-ups in the NCAA title game (1967, 1972). However, the schools met only sporadically since BU left the ECAC to join Hockey East in 1984-85 before the initial Red Hot Hockey event in 2007. Madison Square Garden, home to the NHL’s Rangers and NBA’s Knicks, will once again serve as the venue to showcase the next chapter in this storied rivalry.

“Obviously, it was a tremendous event last time, getting these two storied programs together at Madison Square Garden,” said Cornell head coach Mike Schafer. “It was great to see the support from the fans that made this game a tough ticket to get last time around, and it’ll be exciting to get back down there and play in front of another great crowd.”

“Getting BU and Cornell fans to fill up Madison Square Garden last time was something special,” said BU head coach Jack Parker, whose 808 career wins rank second among active NCAA Division I college hockey coaches. “It was special for the fans and I know it was special for the players. It’s a great venue and a great showcase for college hockey, and we’re looking forward to creating that kind of excitement and energy once again.”

Posted by amc1cu on September 29, 2009

Please join us once again this year as our hockey team rekindles one of Cornell’s oldest and fiercest rivalries in the Red Hot Hockey match up taking place in New York City.  Cornell’s Big Red Men’s Hockey takes on Boston University’s Terriers at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, November 28th, 2009 in a non-conference game .  In 2007 this game was the first ever collegiate hockey match to sell out the 18,200 seat Madison Square Garden, and this year promises to continue the passion.

The Class of 1996 Alumni are teaming up with a few other class years to sponsor a pre-game happy hour for current alumni members.  We have reserved a venue near Madison Square Garden and are looking forward to seeing our classmates and friends there!  Details will be provided to current alumni members.

Zinck’s Night 2008

Posted by alv1 on October 1, 2008

You’ve been working hard and commuting far, day after day.   You’ve been tending to your loved ones.  You’ve been studying hard.  Now it’s time to kick back and enjoy good company and conversation at the annual International Spirit of Zinck’s Night.  Renew connections to long-lost classmates, or meet new friends in your area!  Zinck’s Night has been a time-honored Cornell tradition since the 1960s, but the real spirit of Zinck’s started at an Ithaca saloon, way back in the 1890s.  This year, alumni will celebrate in more than 90 cities around the world!

Lift a drink to Theodore Zinck on Thursday, October 16th, 2008 at a location near you.  Find your closest Zinck’s Night gathering place by clicking on the following link: http://www.alumni.cornell.edu/zincks/index.cfm

If you don’t see a location near your home, gather a few classmates and head out to your favorite local watering hole for an impromptu event.  All it takes is a few Cornellians to celebrate the spirit of Zinck’s!

If you cannot make it to this event, there are plenty of ways you can connect with fellow ‘96ers. Our Class website will be listing upcoming events for all regions, so please check back often!

In addition, we have group pages on Facebook and LinkedIn.  Class of 1996 events will be posted on both sites, so please join or check them often to learn about the events that the Class of 1996 is planning this year. Feel free to post pictures and news to the Facebook page, and look for Homecoming pictures soon!

Homecoming 2008 update

Posted by amc1cu on September 18, 2008

We survived a mini-heat wave here in Ithaca this past weekend, but the weather seems to have cooled off, sending us a string of sunny, 70-degree days. With any luck, this will hold true for Homecoming weekend, which will be held the weekend of September 26-28. Cornell will be hosting a variety of activities for alumni of all years, including the All-Alumni Tailgate on Saturday, September 27, from 11 am – 1 pm in the Crescent parking lot. This is a great chance to meet up with alumni from all classes, but this year it will also be a chance to meet your classmates!  The Class of 1996 will be hosting a table at the All-Alumni Tailgate tent, so please stop by, enjoy the complimentary food, beverages, and musical entertainment, and connect with your classmates.

If you cannot make it this weekend, there are plenty of ways you can connect with fellow ‘96ers. Our Class website will be listing upcoming events for all regions, so please check it out!

Cornell Sports Update

Posted by nmg1 on March 17, 2008

Cornell Men’s Basketball enjoyed a season undefeated in the Ivy League, and earned a 14 seed in the upcoming March Madness NCAA Tournament. Their first game is against #2 seed Stanford University on Thursday, 20-March at 5pm Eastern Time.

The game will be played in Anaheim, California, giving Stanford a slight home court advantage.  So I’d like to encourage all Big Red sports fans in California to take advantage of this rare opportunity to cheer on the Big Red basketball team!

Cornell Women’s Basketball also had a great year, winning the Ivy League title for the first time, and will proceed to the NCAA Women’s tournament as well.  That schedule has not been released yet, but will be available from the Cornell Big Red Athletics website at: http://www.cornellbigred.com/.
